🐬Dolphin Watching Tour

📝 Tour Description

The South Pacific region of Costa Rica offers one of the longest humpback whale watching seasons in the world, lasting nearly year-round. This is due to two different migrations: whales from the North Pacific and those from the South Pacific.

Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) can reach an average length of 15 meters (49 ft) and weigh up to 45 tons. Whales from the north are typically seen from December to April, while those from the south arrive between July and November. During their time in these warm waters, they rarely feed, as they focus mainly on courtship, mating, calving, and nurturing their young. Females usually give birth every 2 to 3 years. Their primary diet consists of krill and other marine microorganisms found in colder waters.

In addition to humpback whales, visitors may occasionally spot false killer whales (Pseudorca crassidens) and, more rarely, other species such as sei whales (Balaenoptera borealis), Bryde’s whales (Balaenoptera edeni), and even orcas (Orcinus orca).

Among the dolphins found in the area, the most common is the spotted dolphin (Stenella attenuata). These dolphins are typically seen in large groups of 70 to 100 or more individuals. They are fast swimmers and are often observed leaping energetically out of the water.
